Ecological–Economic Modelling of Traditional Agroforestry to Promote Farmland Biodiversity with Cost-Effective Payments

چکیده

Orchard meadows, a traditional agroforestry system in Switzerland combining the dual use fruit and fodder production, are declining, even though farmland managed under agri-environmental schemes (AES) has been expanding. Despite increasing interest research for developing sustainable agriculture, it is poorly understood how subsidies contribute to maintenance of trees on agricultural land promotion biodiversity. Therefore, objective present study examine effects incentive-based AES both farmers’ decisions regarding biodiversity by an ecological–economic assessment model. To explore cost-effective AES, we explicitly consider heterogeneity farm types. We apply this integrated model farms Schwarzbubenland, small hilly region Northern Switzerland. Results show that adoption compliance costs participating considerably vary among types, current do not provide farmers with sufficient payments maintain any type orchard despite ecological benefits meadows. The integrating modeling developed enables us better understand relationship between through facilitates design agroforestry.

Enhancing Biodiversity With and Within Agroforestry Plantings

--Agroforestry is the deliberate introduction of multipurpose woody perennials (MWPs) into agroecosystems for the purpose of enhancing agricultural productivity, natural resource conservation, and human environments. This introduction promotes the biodiversity within the agroecosystem and thus its sustainability. This biodiversity is only a fraction of its potential due to the limited number an...

Compensation and cost of conservation payments for biodiversity

Slash-and-burn agriculture in poor tropical countries is one of the main causes of deforestation, leading to environmental costs and to potential externality effects on lowland agricultural productivity. Under innovative environmental policies, direct conservation payments to farmers are starting to be implemented to induce them to abandon slash-and-burn agriculture as well as the use of forest...

How Effective Are Biodiversity Conservation Payments in Mexico?

We assess the additional forest cover protected by 13 rural communities located in the southern state of Chiapas, Mexico, as a result of the economic incentives received through the country's national program of payments for biodiversity conservation. We use spatially explicit data at the intra-community level to define a credible counterfactual of conservation outcomes. We use covariate-matchi...

Harnessing carbon payments to protect biodiversity.

Initiatives to reduce carbon emissions from deforestation and degradation (REDD) are providing increasing incentives for forest protection. The collateral benefits for biodiversity depend on the extent to which emissions reductions and biodiversity conservation can be achieved in the same places. Globally, we demonstrate spatial trade-offs in allocating funds to protect forests for carbon and b...

Agroforestry Practices Promote Biodiversity and Natural Resource Diversity in Atlantic Nicaragua

Tropical forest conversion to pasture, which drives greenhouse gas emissions, soil degradation, and biodiversity loss, remains a pressing socio-ecological challenge. This problem has spurred increased interest in the potential of small-scale agroforestry systems to couple sustainable agriculture with biodiversity conservation, particularly in rapidly developing areas of the tropics. In addition...
